[review] EXO - EXODUS

Exodus is the second EXO full album, and seems like, for SME, releasing two different versions -one in korean, one in mandarin, wasn't enough: this time we have 20. Different. Covers. One for each member (10 for the korean version, 10 for the chinese one). As long as the difference was only in the cover, I would have been okay. But. The photobook changes with the cover: if you buy member X cover, you will have member X photobook. You'd like to have few photos of other members too? Easy, buy the other versions. This isn't cute, SM, not at all.
Of course I still haven't decided which version I want.
And the package isn't even nice >.>

Call Me Baby: the main track of the album and the one that's being promoted. Of course, we were all expecting this, it has nothing to do with the gorgeous, apocalyptic teasers they released (to the point that I'm wondering why did the spend so much money on them), but whatever, I love it. It reminds me a bit of the rythm of 'old' boy bands' songs, I adore it.
The MV is the usual thing, just them dancing around and flirting with the camera with different outfits. Still, they look ridiculously good and I'm a weak human.
There is a thing I don't really like about this song, and it's the choreo. Firs of all, it's messy, with the camera constantly rotating between the various 'sets', people who disappears, people who arrives... watching it on TV can be cool, I guess, but live? Mess. But the worst thing is that 90% of this dance consists in hip thursts, body waves, balls grabbings etc... Like, okay. You have a penis. We got it. Now can you please stop pointing at it, thrusting it in the air and touching it for a second? We won't forget you have it, I promise. I know it's a thing that ALL korean male groups do, because they have to attract females and blah blah blah, but a) it's not a move that I particulary like, and b) this damn choreography is all like that. It's like the choreographer thought "What is dancing? Let's just try to blind people thrusting your groins in their faces."
I'm okay with some pelvic move, some hip thrusts here and there, of course, but not for the whole song O_o

Transformer: basically, this song talks about a super DoS lady. How cute. I don't really get what the 'transformer' thing means... because the lady is strong? Or because she just transforms from sweet to strong and becomes the guy's "owner". I don't get it. Lyrics aside ("tick tick boom boom 'bout to blow"... woah), the song is okay. There are some parts I like and some others I don't, but overall is okay. The M version is 100000 times better than the K one, Tao did a really good job taking the main rapper spot. And I legit can't listen to Sehun's rap, I'm sorry.

What if: if you know me, you know that the typical slow love songs have to have something, for me to like them. This one sounds good because they're good at singing, but nothing more.

My Answer: another love ballad, with the usual lyrics etc etc, but I like it more that What if. It's way less boring and I love the armonies in both versions.

Exodus: first of all, I like the song, it has a good rythm (buuut I don't like the choreo). Still, I'm a bit disappointed. Because it's the song that gives the title to the album, so I was expecting something more, something different from the usual "You're my queen, you make me weak, you hide your thorns behind your beauty" thing. I like the song, but I don't get why it has the same title of the album. What does this album represent, then? What the lyrics of the song say? Something else? I don't get it. Also, why in the world they're talking about an exodus in a song that talks about a girl? There must be some hidden meaning I'm not getting. I can understand why it's the title of the album, but the song...?

El Dorado: shout out for the only song of the album that doesn't talk about love! I consider El Dorado the Black Pearl of Exodus, maybe because we're waiting for this song since the debut teasers, maybe because both have that... epic? feeling. The music goes so well with the lyrics, it really gives me the idea of someone who's going into a journey, an adventure to find something. This song is sooo well done.

Playboy: obviously, it's very sensual. The lyrics, the music, and the dance. It's not my kind of song at all, but somehow it grew on me (maybe because when I listen to it I imagine them dancing eheheheheheeh).

Hurt: I feel like most of the songs of this album are angsty songs that talk about breaking up. But! At least it's not a ballad! If I only focus on the instrumental my head aches, but overall I like it a lot.

Lady Luck: I know everybody is head over heels for this song but... why all this moaning. I'm not a fan of these songs that basically just talk about... sex. And always in the same way. The song itself is nice, though, but ruined by Chanyeol/Tao/some lady constantly groaning in the background. What. Why. I want to listen to some music, not to a random lady moaning.

Beautiful: meh.

Exodus is not a bad album at all, luckily EXO are managing to always release solid albums. I'm not really enthusiastic about it because I'm not a fan of this kind of music, this old R&B feeling. It's a matter of personal taste, I guess. But XOXO, for me, was thousands times better not only because it was closer to my musical preferences, but also because there was more variety, music-wise and lyrics-wise. In this album all the songs except one are directed to a girl and talk about love. It's boring, it's repetitive, it's not what I'm looking for. I want more. I'm not saying that all the songs have to inspire and change my life, but listening for an hour about guys telling a girl how much pretty/sensual/whatever she is... is a bit too much.

Edit: I really missed Luhan's voice, it would have been PERFECT for all the songs. The bright side of him leaving the group is that we get to hear more Minseok and Yixing (whose voices are equally perfect for this kind of music) and that Kyungsoo sung in the M version too :')
I did not miss Kris' rap, sorry.

Have some Kyungsoo's jawline * ^ *
